Educational Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  • Identify the differing methods of treating TMJ.
  • List the steps to follow in treating TMJ.
  • Identify other diseases associated with TMJ.

Course Description

This is a stand alone course and also the third module in a three part series on Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. The course is a comprehensive discussion of treatment options for patients afflicted with the syndrome . Topics include: medication management, use of splints, nutrition counseling, TENS application, ultrasound are discussed as part of an interdisciplinary approach to TMD. The treatment approach is to manage the syndrome of TMD by use of a variety of treatments via differential diagnosis which seeks to alleviate pain associated with the malady.

About the Authors

William D. Bellavia, DDS, MAGD, a graduate of SUNY Buffalo Dental School, conducted a successful clinical practice in Western New York State, and specialized in treatment of the TMD (Temporomandibular Dysfunction). Dr. Bellavia served as a faculty member at the SUNY Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in the instruction of treatment modalities for diseases of the TMJ, as well as an instructor in Occlusion.

Dr. Bellavia has published many clinical articles, notably in The Journal of Neurological and Orthopaedic Medicine and Surgery. And he holds patents on various devices used in the treatment of TMJ disorders. Currently, Dr. Bellavia, continues to steadily write books and articles, while enjoying retirement with his wife, Marilyn.

Ms. Wright is a continuing education editor and writer as well as a Temp PRN with agencies in the Washington State area. Ms. Wright earned her MS at the UNM and Pierce College of Washington State in 1997 and certification in Utilization of the 970 Diode Laser and Safety in Dentistry in February of 2015. Ms. Wright works to implement Dental Education seminars as a Hospital-Dental Liaison building collaborative, mutual efforts to promote patient wellness between medical practitioners and dentists while prioritizing care for untreated, medially compromised patients.
