CX0045: Fluid Selection and Management in Hysteroscopy

Course Abstract:

Hysteroscopy requires uterine distention for the effective visualization of the uterine cavity and the clearing of blood and tissue debris. Options for uterine distention include insufflation with carbon dioxide (CO2) gas, and instillation with electrolytic and nonelectrolytic liquid distentionmedia. In selected cases, hysteroscopy offers advantages over hysterectomy in that it is less invasive, has lower morbidity, shorter recovery times, lower cost and fewer long-term side effects (Stafford, 1977).

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the indications for hysteroscopy.
  2. Review the selection and use of distention media.
  3. State the indications for electrolytic and nonelectrolytic distention fluids.
  4. Describe the potential complications associated with distention media in hysteroscopic surgery.
  5. Discuss the means of preventing complications associated with the use of distention media in hysteroscopic surgery.
