Course Abstract:

Upon completion of this continuing medical education (CME) program, a physician should be better able to

  1. identify the goals and philosophy of hospice and palliative care and apply them to complex clinical situations
  2. apply the decision-making process described in this UNIPAC when making ethical decisions
  3. apply knowledge of medical ethical principles to clinical situations
  4. differentiate instructive and proxy directives
  5. provide guidance when obtaining informed consent for research in hospice and palliative care settings
  6. provide guidance for patients and family members when misconceptions about opioids interfere with optimal pain management
  7. provide guidance for patients and family members when they make decisions about cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  8. provide guidance for patients and family members when they make decisions about futile treatment
  9. provide guidance for patients and family members when they make decisions about the withdrawal of artificial ventilation
  10. provide guidance for patients and family members when they make decisions about the withdrawal of artificial nutrition and hydration
  11. provide guidance when patients or family members request assisted suicide or euthanasia.
