Course Abstract:

Upon completion of this continuing medical education (CME) program, a physician should be better able to

  1. identify common reactions to loss
  2. use predictors to assess the likelihood of complicated reactions to loss
  3. use effective interventions to reestablish a patient’s sense of purpose
  4. use effective interventions to enhance a patient’s sense of efficacy
  5. use effective interventions to foster hope
  6. assess and manage anxiety and depression with pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions
  7. differentiate complicated and uncomplicated grief reactions
  8. assess for spiritual pain and provide effective basic interventions
  9. involve other team members in alleviating psychological and spiritual pain.
