America's drug problems stem not so much from drugs themselves but from an underlying and widely held belief that such substances can help us face modern life. We act as if having fun, working long and hard, and coping successfully with stressors of daily life all depend upon using drugs. Knowing that no drug produces only positive effects, we should expect and not be surprised that our society has problems with drugs.
